Pakistan welcomes new Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa
PM Shehbaz Sharif expresses hopes for peace and stability in the Middle Eastern nation
ISLAMABAD: In a significant shift in foreign policy, Pakistan has welcomed the new interim President of Syria, Ahmed Al-Sharaa.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed this recognition, marking a notable change in Pakistan’s diplomatic stance towards the war-torn country.
“We welcome Mr. Ahmed Al-Sharaa’s assumption of office as President of the Syrian Arab Republic during the transitional phase and hope that the new leadership will be able to bring peace, progress, and prosperity to the brotherly people of Syria,” Sharif stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The announcement came shortly after Al-Sharaa's appointment, following a campaign that resulted in the removal of Bashar al-Assad, who had ruled Syria for over a decade.

A new era for Syria
Ahmed Al-Sharaa's presidency is a pivotal moment for Syria, as it coincides with the dissolution of the previous government structure under the 2012 Constitution, the parliament, and the military institutions. Al-Sharaa, a former opposition leader, assumed office on Wednesday and has been tasked with forming a transitional government that represents Syria’s diverse communities. His government is expected to oversee the establishment of institutions and prepare for free and fair elections once the political climate allows.
In his inaugural address, Al-Sharaa emphasised the importance of inclusivity and stability in governance. He is determined to ensure that all sects and minorities have a voice, stating that there will be no ban on girls' education – a clear indication of a more moderate approach compared to his predecessor.
The Syrian crisis
The Syrian crisis has had profound implications for international relations, particularly within the Arab world. Many Arab nations were quick to respond positively to Al-Sharaa's presidency. Notably, Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi congratulated him, wishing for success in fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people for progress and prosperity.

Pakistan’s decision to recognise Al-Sharaa is believed to be influenced by its close ties with various Arab nations, as well as Turkey, which has been a key supporter of the new leadership. Historically, Pakistan maintained a balanced policy during the Syrian civil war, presenting a facade of neutrality while reportedly supporting the Assad regime behind closed doors.
Pakistan-Syria ties
The relationship between Pakistan and Syria is steeped in history, with military and cultural exchanges dating back several decades. Pakistani pilots flew Syrian jets during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, and many Pakistani military officers trained in Syria. This historical bond has played a crucial role in shaping Pakistan's foreign policy, leading to its cautious stance during the upheaval that followed the Arab Spring.
The emergence of Al-Sharaa represents a potential turning point in Syria’s relations with its Arab neighbours. His ascent to power is viewed as a departure from the oppressive regime of Assad, who faced widespread condemnation for his violent response to protests in 2011. With a new leadership in place, the Arab League’s long-standing suspension of Syria may soon come to an end, as nations seek to stabilise the region.
First foreign trip to Saudi Arabia
In a move to solidify his position, Ahmed Al-Sharaa is making his first foreign trip to Saudi Arabia, where he met with Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman. The discussions centred on humanitarian and economic cooperation, highlighting the importance of bilateral relations moving forward.

During this meeting, the leaders discussed extensive plans in energy, technology, education, and health sectors, signalling a commitment to rebuilding the war-torn nation. Al-Sharaa’s background – having spent part of his childhood in Saudi Arabia – adds an interesting dimension to the evolving dynamics.
